A kid in Alberta reads a negative number off the weather app years before a textbook introduces one, which is exactly the right order. So this board starts at −20 on a January morning rather than at a definition.
Everything is counted on a number line, never in a column. It is the model all four provinces name for this, and it is the one that makes the gap from −8 to 5 obviously thirteen instead of mysteriously thirteen: count up to zero, then carry on. The line is the same one Add & Subtract uses for counting up, with zero in the middle.
The hard one, and the reason the board exists, is the third gear: the difference between two temperatures that sit on opposite sides of zero. A difference is a distance, so it is never negative however the two numbers look — and the walk across zero is two hops added together.
One rule this board refuses to teach: “two minuses make a plus”. It is true of multiplying and false of nearly everything a child meets first, and it is the single most reliable way to get stuck here. A sign is a direction along the line, every time, and adding a negative is simply a step to the left.
The Open Road puts the same line under elevation and under a bank balance. A balance below zero means owed — a position on the line, counted the same way as everything else, and never a verdict on anybody.
Coro — chorus. Everyone gets to play.
