Decimals you can say out loud

What 3/10 is as a decimal, which digit sits in the tenths place of 4.6, whether 0.7 or 0.65 is bigger (the one with more digits is not), and 0.4 + 0.3 — tenths add like apples. Then times and divide by 10 and 100 as what they really are: every digit shifting one place, with the point staying put.

Third Gear carries the idea most adults get wrong. Only about a third of 12-year-olds know that 26.3 × 0.4 is less than 26.3, because “multiplying makes bigger” was true for every number they met in Grade 2. Here 0.5 × 8 is half of 8, 0.25 × 12 is a quarter, and the lesson says so in words. Open Road is three items at $2.50, 2.5 kg at $4 a kilo, the gap between 20.5° and 18.9°, and a 2.4 m board in 0.6 m pieces — the decimals you meet by Thursday.

Coro — chorus. Everyone gets to play.
